Dire--
I just read your post this morning. I've been pretty much lurking of late--it's been a bit crazy in here. You are very much in my thoughts today. I've been sober nearly 3 1/2 years and my life has NEVER been better. After 30 years of addiction/alcoholism, I was going to lose the best things that ever came my way--my wife Diane and sons. I had lots of fun for many years, but it was no longer fun, and I was putting at risk every thing that was important in my life. I entered Kaiser's year long program, and it gave me a real solid foundation for my recovery. The most important thing for me has been finding a good meeting and getting there as often as I can. Don't let AA and the Steps scare you--it can be overwhelming at first, but it can save your life. All you have to do is Step One (which I think you already have): "Admitted we were powerless over alcohol and that our lives had become unmanageable." That's all that matters right now. You can do the others as you feel the need to. It is a very simple program when you get down to the basics of it: go to meetings and don't drink between meetings and your life WILL get better.
Sorry to get on the recovery soap box, but it saved my life in every way. You can do this Don. You have a huge heart and I know how much your family means to you. Do it for yourself, and everyone in your life will benefit.
I would be happy to post my e-mail if you would like to talk/correspond regarding living sober--it ain't always easy, but the rewards are immeasurable. Good luck and thoughts and prayers to you.
My name is Tom and I'm an alcoholic and an addict
